I had a pleasant surprise on Friday. I had the day off from my day job, and after taking the pups outside I decided to get some exercise. As I was about half way through my walk a woman was coming towards me. As the distance between us decreased, she smiled and said hello.
I knew that voice. It was Melissa. We had worked together over twenty years ago. I remember the last time I saw her. She had just started to date her now husband and we had participated in a haunted house where we both worked.
You could have knocked me over with a feather. After hugging each other we did a quick loop together, as she was almost done with her walk. When I asked what she was doing in my neighborhood she pointed to a house just down the street and said, “I live right there.” I felt my mouth drop open and I laughed and told her I live two streets over. We were both surprised. We’ve lived in the same area for approximately seven years.
As we spent the next few minutes walking my final loop, but in the span of less than ten minutes we caught up on the important details, our children, grandchildren and jobs. It felt like we had just seen each other as we hugged goodbye with a promise to bump into each other again. I had cookies to bake and she had a son to take on a college tour.
Before we went our separate ways, of course I talked about being a writer and she said, she too has always wanted to write. I promised to text her some book titles to get her started, but my piece of advice, was just start writing. It is the most wonderful thing to do.
As I walked home I began to remember little details of Melissa. When she purchased her first home, her parents coming from England to visit her and when she told me about elevens, a short break at eleven AM for tea and a biscuit. I’m sure we’ll be bumping into each other again, and who knows maybe this will be the incentive I need to be a consistent exerciser.
Life certainly does work in mysterious ways.
Until next time,
I wish you happiness.
